As we mentioned in the first episode of our podcast, Authoress Cafe was a small business with big dreams. Originally, we were working with the Kelly, the main renter of the shop space, COVE: Arts and Wellness was located on the second floor - above the main shop of the building, Esoterica. Stef and I were touring around Artisan markets and needed a kitchen to expand Tea Spectral. Kelly loved working with us, and so she welcomed us with open arms.

When the shop was mostly fixed up, we had a soft opening, and couldn't grab enough interest in our Arts and Wellness classes. And that's when Authoress Cafe came to be. It was casual, cute, and a bit different. Being on the second floor, with no elevator, we had to be a little exclusive.

We were a space for Writers. Introverted and quiet, we made space for tea time, a shelf filled with books to read, and a menu handled by our website. It was easy, needless to say. Anyone could come upstairs, take a seat, and write anytime, while having tea and snacks. The mere downfall was in its schedule.  We opened at night by 8pm, or weekends by noon - for only five hours.

It was strange, but it did bring people in. We had screenwriters and songwriters, friends and passersby casually attending. All it took was Instagram and joining festivals and meetups to promote our open hours.

It was only a few months, but the hard work almost paid off. When Kelly learned that she had a mis shaped heart, her hospital recommended her to make immediate changes in her life, including a move to the East Coast, for a low stress lifestyle. This devastated many of us working in both COVE and Authoress Cafe, and the loss took almost a year to recover from.

Stef and I attempted to record a Biblio Sinensis podcast episode about it, but every single one just led to dismay. It hurt, and it was raw. We had to do a lot of soul searching to cope with the loss.

Throwing ourselves into a number of Farmer's Markets and hosting private lectures, we made it a point to make new connections and build up Tea Spectral with what resources remained from Authoress Cafe.

Time passed, and today we've moved forward from subjects about just tea and books. Biblio Sinensis podcast was shut down, and Authoress Cafe was revived into our newest podcast. It's our hope that people could enjoy what plans we had in this tiny space. The open mics, the casual birthdays, and meetups... What could have been are now here. So, subscribe to our latest episode, sip a cup of tea or coffee or other, and enjoy Authoress Cafe!
